MCS Certification Is Non-Negotiable

Only an MCS-certified installer can register your system for the Smart Export Guarantee. Without MCS certification, you cannot legally export and earn from your panels. Verify your installer's MCS number at mcscertified.com before signing anything.

Get Everything in Writing

A verbal promise from a sales rep has no legal standing. Every warranty, specification, and inclusion must appear on the final signed contract. If it's not on the contract, it doesn't exist. Request a written MCS commissioning certificate after installation.

Pay Deposits by Credit Card

Credit card payments over £100 are protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act — if the installer goes bust before completing the work, your card provider is jointly liable. This is one of the most important consumer protections available.

The 8 Things to Demand in Every Solar Contract

These are the absolute minimum requirements for a compliant, enforceable solar installation contract in the UK.

Solar installation contract review — what to check in your quote before signing an £8,000+ commitment
1
MCS certificate number of the installing company
Verify it at mcscertified.com before signing. The number on the quote should match the certificate on their website. Never accept "we're applying for MCS" — they must be certified at the time of contract.
2
Full panel specification: brand, model, wattage, and quantity
With this information you can look up the manufacturer's warranty documents, degradation curves, and UK availability. Insist on receiving the datasheet before signing.
3
Full inverter specification: brand, model, and warranty term
Inverters are the most failure-prone component (average replacement at Year 12). Know what you're getting. Budget inverters save the installer money, not you.
4
10-year workmanship warranty covering roof penetrations
Every bolt hole is a potential leak. The installer must warrant their roof penetrations are weatherproof for the duration of the workmanship warranty — get this explicitly stated.
5
25-year panel performance warranty with linear degradation rate
The warranted Year 25 output percentage should be stated (≥84.8% is standard). A vague "25-year warranty" without a specified degradation rate is not the same thing.
6
Full total price including scaffolding, VAT (0%), and DNO fees
Hidden costs are the most common source of disputes. Confirm VAT is 0% (it should be for residential solar). If the system requires a G99 DNO application, those fees (£500–£2,500) should be disclosed upfront.
7
Deposit terms and payment schedule
Maximum 25% deposit. Balance due on completion, not before. If the installer wants full payment before installation begins, walk away.
8
MCS registration and SEG notification confirmation
The installer should handle MCS commissioning registration. This triggers automatic notification to your energy supplier for SEG eligibility. If they leave this to you, they're omitting a key service.
